Comparing Analytical Purity Figures
Purity figures are method-dependent
A percentage reported by one analytical method may not describe the same property as a percentage from another method. Review the technique, detector, reference standard, calculation, and reporting basis before comparing numbers.
Check what the percentage represents
Determine whether the figure is based on peak area, mass balance, assay against a standard, or another calculation. Water, salts, counterions, residual solvents, and unmeasured components can affect interpretation.
Compare like with like
Use reports tied to the relevant lots and compare results generated under sufficiently similar conditions. A higher number is not automatically more informative when the underlying methods differ.

Control the storage environment
Lyophilized materials are commonly managed with attention to temperature stability, moisture protection, light exposure, and container integrity. Follow the product-specific documentation and the procedures established by the responsible laboratory.
Limit avoidable exposure
Record receipt conditions, storage location, handling events, and any temperature excursions. Minimize unnecessary opening and movement, and use suitable controls to reduce contamination or moisture exposure.
Keep traceable records
Label containers clearly and maintain dates, lot identifiers, storage conditions, and responsible personnel in the material record. General information does not replace product-specific stability data.
Reading a Certificate of Analysis
Start with identity and traceability
Confirm that the material name, lot or batch identifier, report number, and testing date correspond to the product being reviewed. A report that cannot be tied to a specific lot should not be treated as batch-specific documentation.
Review the analytical method
Identify the method used, the laboratory that performed the work, and whether the report describes sample preparation and acceptance criteria. Different methods answer different analytical questions.
Read results with their limitations
Distinguish measured findings from specifications, estimates, or marketing language. Check units, detection limits, chromatograms, signatures, and any qualifying notes before drawing conclusions.
